Co-requisites

Candidates must have or have had at least two cases in supervised psychoanalysis to be eligible for upper level courses.

Course Description

This seminar will use analytic case material presented by invited graduates, faculty, and students to explore complex issues surrounding analyzability and its assessment. The course is designed for advanced candidates whose substantial analytic experience enables a more sophisticated examination of this important but often inadequately considered phase of psychoanalytic practice. Fourth year students only.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. describe how particular analytic couples fail to establish a therapeutic process.
  2. refine their assessment skills to better determine the capacities necessary in patients for whom psychoanalysis might be recommended.

Evaluation Method

Each student’s participation in class discussion and his or her demonstration of understanding of the course objectives and reading material is assessed in a written evaluation by the instructor(s).
