In honor of Pride Month and Juneteenth, CRCD is hosting our third Film Discussion Night for the NYPSI community.
This year, we’ll gather on Zoom to have a conversation about The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, a 2017 documentary about Queer liberation activist and prominent leader of the Stonewall Uprising, Marsha P. Johnson—a Black transwoman whose life and work, alongside fellow trans activist Sylvia Rivera, touched many—and who died under mysterious circumstances. Many in the community believe Johnson was murdered. Interviews and archival footage tell the stories of her work and of those close to her as the film follows the efforts of a modern day activist to reopen her case.
This film is particularly timely to discuss given the current political climate, with hateful rhetoric and attacks upon our transgender and nonbinary family members, friends, colleagues, patients, and others in our larger community.
Please DO watch the film beforehand! It is available for streaming on Netflix. For further reference and reading, supplementary articles will be forthcoming before the screening.
For those interested in watching more, the documentaries Happy Birthday, Martha! and Pay It No Mind: The Life and Times of Martha P. Johnson provide additional information about her life and the events around Stonewall.
Again, please DO watch the film before attending! It promises to be a lively and enlightening discussion!
