Course Description

In this continuous case conference, a child case presentation will alternate with an adult case presentation.  Discussion of the analytic material of the cases will emphasize deepening of the treatment in mid-phase work in terms of process and technique especially regarding transference and countertransference. The instructors will make comparisons between analytic technique with adults and children drawing from the clinical material presented.
The course is designed for advanced candidates in the 3rd and 4th year classes combined.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. describe and better utilize psychoanalytic modes of listening and intervening in order to deepen psychoanalytic treatments especially with regard to transference/countertransference configurations.
  2. compare adult and child analytic treatments with regard to: the psychoanalytic frame, the modes of intervention, the goals of treatment, and the role of the analyst.

Evaluation Method

Each student’s participation in class discussion and demonstration of understanding of the course objectives, readings and clinical material is assessed in a written evaluation by the instructor(s).
