“Evolution of a ‘Classic’ Psychoanalytic Institute: Escape from Rome”

This presentation will highlight theoretical variations of core concepts endemic to the history of psychoanalysis at NYPSI and their connection to other psychoanalytic theoretical approaches, to general psychological and neuropsychological findings. These concepts include unconscious fantasy, conflict and compromise theory, transference and countertransference. Comparisons between theories will be illustrated, particularly between the concept of transference and the therapeutic alliance. The importance of systematized research to theory development and practice will be stressed.

Leon Hoffman, M.D. is certified in Adult, Adolescent, and Child Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis. He is Training and Supervising Analyst, Supervisor in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis, and Co-Director of the Pacella Research Center at the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute; Faculty, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai; and Chief Psychiatrist/Psychoanalyst at West End Day School.  Dr. Hoffman is senior author (along with Drs. Timothy Rice and Tracy Prout) of “Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children with Externalizing Behaviors (RFP-C): A Psychodynamic Approach.” An RCT has recently been completed at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology in New York, with Tracy Prout as PI (https://www.rfp-c.com). Among several papers from this work, findings from a pilot study were published in the American Journal of Psychotherapy in 2019.

 

Harold P. Blum, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education, affiliated with New York University School of Medicine, and an Honorary Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. He is the Former Executive Director of The Sigmund Freud Archives and the author of several books and more than 165 papers. Dr. Blum was the recipient of the inaugural Sigourney Award given by the Sigourney Foundation.

 

Educational Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1) describe how NYPSI’s core concepts are similar or different from other contemporary psychoanalytic and psychological approaches.
2) explain how systematized research contributes to the practice and development of theory.
