“Evolution of a ‘Classic’ Psychoanalytic Institute: Escape from Rome”

This presentation will highlight theoretical variations of core concepts endemic to the history of psychoanalysis at NYPSI and their connection to other psychoanalytic theoretical approaches, to general psychological and neuropsychological findings. These concepts include unconscious fantasy, conflict and compromise theory, transference and countertransference. Comparisons between theories will be illustrated, particularly between the concept of transference and the therapeutic alliance. The importance of systematized research to theory development and practice will be stressed.
