EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. identify shortcomings in the existing English translation to Sigmund Freud’s psychological works, described in the critical literature that has accumulated in Freud scholarship since the 1960s.
  2. use more appropriate English words for some of Freud’s German technical terminology than has been used previously. They will also be able to use the existing technical terms with a better understanding of the differences between them and their German equivalents.
  3. explain the differences between the existing Standard Edition of Freud’s Complete Psychological Works and the Revised Edition of those works, not only with respect to the translations themselves but also with respect to the editorial apparatus which contextualizes the translations, in relation to the past 60 years of Freud scholarship which has taken place between the two editions.
