NYPSI’s licensure-qualifying program in psychoanalysis includes the following components:

  • two years of pre-clinical training
  • personal analysis with a Training Analyst
  • weekly supervision of analytic cases in which a collegial experience is provided
  • the didactic curriculum

Each candidate is assigned an advisor to support his/her training. In addition, each in-coming class is assigned a class coordinator who gathers feedback about the curriculum from candidates so that the faculty can better meet candidates’ educational needs.

The didactic program is continually evaluated and periodically revised on the basis of the faculty’s and student’s evaluations. Adult analytic courses are fully integrated with courses in child and adolescent development in order to synthesize dynamic and developmental factors. The curriculum combines immersion in psychoanalytic theory; a thorough review of the psychoanalytic understanding of character, neurosis and other psychopathological states; courses in child and adolescent development; continuous case seminars (of both adult and child/adolescent patients); and  research and empirical studies courses. While the curriculum emphasizes modern ego psychology, all contemporary psychoanalytic theories, including Object Relations, Modern  Kleinian, Self-Psychology, and Relational theories are studied.
