In this lecture, Mark Solms will describe the pre-history of the Neuropsychoanalytic movement as it unfolded in the 1990’s at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the Arnold Pfeffer Centre. He will then provide a sweeping overview of subsequent developments in the field, and possible future directions.

BIOGRAPHIES

Mark Solms, PhD is a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society and the American and South African Psychoanalytic Associations. He is Director of Neuropsychology at the Neuroscience Institute of the University of Cape Town and an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Solms has received numerous honors and awards, including the Sigourney Prize. He has published 350 scientific papers, and nine books, the latest being The Only Cure (2026). He is the authorized editor and translator of the Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (24 volumes) and the forthcoming Complete Neuroscientific Works of Sigmund Freud (4 volumes). 

Maggie Zellner, Ph.D., L.P., is a neuropsychoanalytic educator and psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. She is the Executive Director of the Neuropsychoanalysis Foundation in New York, and former Managing Editor of the journal Neuropsychoanalysis. Maggie received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in the Neuropsychology Sub-program at Queens College. She is a founding member of the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society, and a graduate and member of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP) in New York. Maggie has taught neuroscience to the psychoanalytically-minded since 2003.
